The Lie of Being Special

Everyone wants to feel special. We tell our children they are special. We reassure our friends and loved ones that they are special. We admire people with extraordinary talents and place them on a pedestal—athletes, musicians, actors, and others whose gifts seem to set them apart.

The desire to be special can become a powerful driving force. It pushes some to work harder and compete for recognition. It can fill us with pride when we succeed or leave us feeling inferior when we compare ourselves to others.

But what if our understanding of being "special" is flawed? The harsh reality is that no one is inherently special apart from God. We may call one another special, but does that make it true? If our value is based on our abilities, achievements, or recognition, then our worth rises and falls with them.

"For who makes you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive?" (1 Corinthians 4:7)

The Bible reminds us that everything we have comes from God.

"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights..." (James 1:17)
"A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven." (John 3:27)

Our bodies, our minds, our gifts, our talents, and every opportunity we receive are all His. Some people faithfully develop the abilities God has given them through years of hard work and discipline, but they did not create those abilities. They simply cultivated what God first placed in them.

God alone is truly extraordinary. He alone deserves the glory. When we remain connected to Him, our lives become meaningful—not because of who we are in ourselves, but because of who He is.

"For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever." (Romans 11:36)

This stands in sharp contrast to the spirit of this world. From the beginning, Satan has sought to redirect glory from the Creator to the creation. His temptation has always been the same: to persuade us to seek greatness, significance, and independence apart from God. As the ruler of this world, he promotes a mindset that exalts self, while God's kingdom calls us to exalt Him. Whenever our identity is built on becoming more important than others instead of belonging to God, we are embracing the world's way of thinking rather than God's. Genesis 3:5, Romans 1:25, John 12:31, 2 Corinthians 4:4

I have played in bands, and I've often noticed one member trying to outshine everyone else. They play the loudest, sing the loudest, or demand the most attention. Instead of making the music better, it throws the whole band out of balance.

"Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually." (1 Corinthians 12:12–27)

A great orchestra is different. Every musician follows the conductor. No one is trying to prove they are more important than the rest. Each person faithfully plays the part they were given, and together they create something far more beautiful than any individual could accomplish alone.

This is God's design for His people. He is the Conductor of all creation. As each of us takes the place He has prepared for us, we become part of something far greater than ourselves. United in one mind and one heart, we reflect His glory and become a light to the world (John 17:20–23).

The desire to elevate ourselves above others is rooted in pride. It breeds comparison, competition, jealousy, and division. It convinces us that our worth is found in being greater than someone else rather than in belonging to God. In pursuing our own importance, we can lose sight of our greatest need—that apart from Him, we can do nothing (John 15:5).

The gospel points us in the opposite direction. It calls us to humility, reminding us that every good thing comes from God. Our purpose is not to become extraordinary in our own eyes, but to glorify the One who truly is. When Christ increases, and we decrease, we discover that our greatest significance has never been in being special—it has always been in belonging to Him.

"Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." (1 Corinthians 10:31)

We can spend our lives trying to convince ourselves—and everyone else—that we are special. But that pursuit separates us from one another and from God. At its core, it is a pursuit of our own glory. It is the same temptation that has existed from the beginning: to become our own god rather than to glorify the One who created us. The result is the world we see around us today—a world filled with pride, division, conflict, and unrest because everyone is fighting to be first.

Or we can surrender our desire for self-glory and join the One who alone is truly glorious. United with Him, we become one family, sharing one mind and one heart. This is what makes the kingdom of God so different from the kingdoms of this world. Instead of competing for recognition, we delight in reflecting His glory together. Like an orchestra following its conductor, each person faithfully fulfills the role God has given them, creating a harmony that no individual could ever achieve alone.

This is the light of God's kingdom. It is not people striving to become greater than their Creator, but people joyfully living under His rule. When we embrace this truth, we stop chasing our own glory and begin reflecting His. In Him, we find the unity, peace, and harmony for which we were created.

"For who makes you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you indeed received it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?" 1 Corinthians 4:7
