Feeling Disconnected

Tree

Emotional Detachment

I spent much of my life feeling like I never truly fit in this world. The closest I ever came was with my family—but even there, I sometimes wondered if what felt like “fitting in” was simply the result of time spent together, rather than a deep sense of belonging.

No matter where I was, there lingered a quiet sense of disconnection. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t shake it. I began to question myself: Is it just me? Am I different? Am I incapable of truly connecting with others?

Over time, I came to realize this feeling isn’t unique to me. Many people carry the same quiet disconnection, constantly searching for something that finally feels like life. For some, that ache becomes so heavy they begin to believe they don’t belong anywhere.

What I came to understand is that this disconnection wasn’t just personal—it pointed to something deeper. And the answer is found in the picture Jesus gave in John 15:

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)

When Adam and Eve turned from God, they became like branches cut off from the source of life. And every branch that came from them—all of us—entered into that same separation. As it is written, “your iniquities have separated you from your God” (Isaiah 59:2).

The reason we feel such deep disconnection is that we are cut off from God—the One who alone unites us and gives us a true sense of belonging. We are like scattered branches. We may form connections with one another, but the very source meant to hold us together, sustain us, and bear fruit in us has been rejected.

On our own, we don’t have the strength to hold one another up. We are like orphans, searching for the family we were made for in God the Father. He alone is the root and foundation that can sustain us. In Him, we are brought together—united in one love, one truth, one heart, one Spirit, one desire, and one mind, just as Scripture says, “endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace… one body and one Spirit” (Ephesians 4:3–4).

Apart from God, we are left with sin, which distorts even the love we try to give. Our lives become marked by conflicting desires, opinions, and versions of truth, making real peace impossible. As the Word says, “the carnal mind is enmity against God” (Romans 8:7). Instead of unity, we experience division—feeling misunderstood, isolated, and out of place, because what we believe we want, need, and should be often clashes with others.

Without God, we also lose a true sense of identity. We begin to define ourselves by the people around us, our successes and failures, our wounds and struggles, and even our possessions—reaching for something stable, yet never quite finding it. Yet Scripture reminds us, “your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3).

In the end, we don’t truly fit anywhere—and that struggle reveals something deeper: we were never meant to. We were made to belong to God, and to be with those who belong to Him. “Now therefore you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God” (Ephesians 2:19).

When we are gathered in Him, we share something greater than anything else—the love of God. We are brought into one Spirit, one mind, and one love. At last, we are home—part of the family we were always meant for. No longer orphaned, but joined together as the vine and the branches, becoming who we were created to be.

As it is written, “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God” (1 John 3:1).

Home at last.
