Happiness vs. Joy
Finding Lasting Joy in God
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. ~ Romans 15:13
Happiness depends on external circumstances or events; it is short-lived and can fluctuate frequently. Joy arises from an internal state of a profound sense of well-being—associated with peace, contentment, and fulfillment. The joy of the Lord is rooted in God, bringing us internal contentment and peace for eternity because God is eternal. ~ Psalm 16:11
I find myself constantly pursuing fleeting moments of happiness instead of true joy, hoping that by accumulating these moments, I might eventually create lasting joy. If that doesn't work, I hope it helps me forget the absence of joy in my life: family get-togethers, concerts, and trips.
Worse, I tend to chase happy moments that are unhealthy for me—junk food I don't need, excessive television, and shopping trips I should avoid.
But the worst are the happy moments that are spiritually unhealthy. I sometimes gather with family and engage in inappropriate humor, watch shows with coarse language, or avoid spiritual conversations with friends to keep moments pleasant. These fleeting pleasures satisfy the flesh, not the spirit.
As a young Christian, I felt divided: one side all about God, the other slipping back into old habits. I thought I needed a middle ground. Now I understand that this was my flesh seeking temporary highs, while the spiritual side is rooted in the eternal joy of the Lord. ~ Galatians 5:22-23
Chasing short-lived happiness indulges our flesh and harms our spiritual health. It leaves me stranded in a desert, fleeting moments evaporating quickly, trapping me in limbo.
Why We Chase Happiness
Just like addictive behaviors, it is quick, easy, and momentarily satisfying, requiring little sacrifice. But it steals all that is good in life. A life with God is rich, profound, and joyful, yet demands complete surrender. Just as a branch must be rooted in the vine, it cannot focus on itself if it seeks true joy. ~ John 15:5
Seeking fleeting happiness is like admitting, "I can't bear life without being high." My past experiences with drugs showed that "good times" are forgettable; true joy rooted in God creates enduring treasures.
Without God, our decisions are clouded by emptiness, chasing temporary highs that satisfy the flesh but not the spirit. Instead, we must shift focus from fleeting happiness to God, the source of true joy. ~ Psalm 37:4
