Slaves, Honor Your Master
In HIs IMage. For His Purpose. That's why life matters.
The Master You Choose Shapes Your Eternity
Many people struggle with the concept of slavery in the Bible, assuming it means God condoned it. But what we often miss is that God used the image of slavery to point to a deeper spiritual reality about who—or what—we serve.
First, it's important to understand that slavery in biblical times was quite different from the brutal, dehumanizing slavery we associate with more recent history. In many cases, it resembled a structured form of servanthood—where individuals, often by choice or necessity, served in roles more akin to trusted and honored household staff, rather than being treated as property or abused.
The Hard Truth
Second—and this is the deeper truth God wants us to grasp through the example of slavery—we are all slaves to something. Whether we realize it or not, each of us serves a master: ourselves, other people, Satan, or God. We all answer to one of these. Each directs our decisions, shapes our desires, and ultimately makes demands on our lives.
The real question isn't why slavery exists—because in one form or another, slavery is part of the human condition. The real question is: Who will you serve?
Will you be enslaved to yourself—constantly chasing fulfillment, yet never truly finding it? Serving your own limited understanding, restless desires, and fleeting emotions? Or will you be enslaved to the expectations of others, seeking approval from people who are themselves broken and searching?
The hard truth is this: if you're not a slave to God, you're being manipulated by Satan. Whether knowingly or unknowingly, you are under his influence. His greatest tactic is to convince you that you’re in control—that you’re your own master—when in reality, you’re serving a self that listens to him. He uses the world and the people around you to keep you trapped in the illusion of freedom while keeping you far from the truth.
So, who will you choose as your master? The darkness of Satan? The brokenness of humanity? Or the righteousness of God?
These are the only choices. And God’s purpose in using the image of slavery in Scripture is to awaken us to this spiritual reality. He wants us to choose wisely.
Will you serve the One who created you, gave you life, and died for you? Or will you remain bound to the emptiness of self, the manipulation of Satan, and the demands of a fallen world?
God is the only Master who is both holy and loving. He doesn’t need us—He is complete in Himself. He doesn’t demand forced service—He desires our love. And only He can fill the deep void within us, giving us a peace and purpose the world can never offer.
Every other master will take from you until nothing remains. God alone gives—life, freedom, holiness, and eternal joy. The question isn’t whether you’ll be a slave; it’s whether you’ll serve the Master who sets you free
“But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life.” ~ Romans 6:22
“You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” — Jeremiah 29:13
